PREVENTING AND COMBATING THE DEVASTATING HARMS OF
PORNOGRAPHY, PROSTITUTION, SEX TRAFFICKING & SEXUAL SLAVERY
Child Sex Abuse Has Devastating Lifelong Consequences

-- By Thriving Survivor

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I grew up learning to be a sex object for men. My uncle trained me. He took some photos of me in the nude when I was 18 months to two years old. Later on I looked back at the photos, when I was older but still a child, and they seemed very adult-like to me. They were posed in a kind of an erotic way, almost like they were being taken for a pedophile to enjoy. In other words, they looked like child pornography to me.
It didn't seem 100% wrong to me, though. After all, he was my uncle, so I thought that if his behavior was really bad, then someone would have stopped him.
In these photos he took I was frequently crying. I was just a baby, and I should have been doing things that babies liked, not sprawled uncomfortably naked on display for my uncle's camera.
Although I don't have any clear memories of more direct abuse by my uncle, or any indisputable evidence of him sexually molesting me, I've always felt quite sure that he did do this to me. This is because there were many clues indicating this while I was growing up.
For instance, I frequently had pains and sensations in my private parts when I was a girl, that could have had no other explanation. At first I thought that these pains were normal, but when I started to get older and talk to other girls my age, I realized that this was not the case -- that I was alone in this regard. This just caused me to feel different from my peers, and to go back to being silent about what I'd been through.
And then there was the time I went to see a gynecologist when I was just 13, because of these pains and a variety of related physical problems and symptoms. (Which also continued after this time.) After examining me the doctor asked me if I had ever had sex. I was shocked and said no, I was a virgin! But later I realized that he was asking me this for a reason, and it was because of what he had observed when physically examining me.
These were just some of the clues that made it clear to me that my uncle had directly sexually abused me. In addition to this there were other unexplained things that made no sense to me at the time, or that I thought were "normal." But in retrospect I now understand that all of these manifestations were different forms of evidence of abuse -- physical effects and memories, that my body was experiencing, recording and storing.
In any case, the bottom line is that whatever he actually *did* do had a very harmful impact on me, whether it was his known behavior, such as taking nude photos of me as a toddler, and his cruel mental and emotional manipulation of me, or any abuse that I wasn't consciously aware of, because I was too young to understand what was happening, or because I had buried the memories to protect myself from the trauma.
As a girl, I became increasingly despondent and depressed. My uncle would make mention of my early childhood, when I was a toddler, and tell me how happy I used to be when I woke up in the mornings. This cruel comparison to how unhappy I was now would just exacerbate my misery, and make me even more uncomfortable.
Thinking about this really angers me now, because it was probably true that I *was* quite a happy baby, before he molested me. And of course any "moodiness" I displayed was completely normal at my realization of the truth of his harmful actions. In actuality, I was devastated because I had trusted and loved this man.
My depression was only one result of whatever violations occurred. In addition to this there was my ever-increasing awareness that something really terrible had actually had been done to me. Making this worse was my uncle's denial that he had done anything wrong, and his continuing to shift blame onto me by his implying that there was something wrong with my "thinking."
My uncle tried everything he could to deny his abuses, from telling me I was crazy, unstable, and other excuses -- all to try to and escape the label of "pedophile."
In my horror, disgust and disbelief at such a young age, I many times became very angry, and often wondered where everyone else was during his escapades. Where had my parents been, and why had they allowed this to occur?
I was known to have unhappy moods at that time, because I was so painfully aware of how every adult I had known had tragically let me down, while I saw friends my age remain safe from the abuses I had experienced.
So I got a reputation for being emotionally unstable and unpleasant. But the whole situation seemed so unbelievably heartless, unfair and cruel, and I was justifiably upset. No one said anything to my uncle about his behavior, and I was increasingly blamed by my family members and outsiders for how I was acting. They were all too eager and willing to not know where it was coming from. Some even gladly stepped in line with the insults -- alongside my "blameless" molester.
Tragically, with all of these developments, I realized how unfair life was, and though I tried to develop normally, my melancholy remained. I had become sexualized because of what my uncle had done to me, and whenever I did feel an attraction towards a man, I became afraid, rather than excited.
I was scared almost all of the time of meeting someone whom I might like, or be attracted to. Sometimes it felt better to meet men who didn't elicit that response, because at least then I wouldn't be terrified, or feel pain around them that I couldn't explain or talk to them about. Many times I stuck to spending time people who were safe, like women, because I knew I would have no concerns regarding being attracted to them.
The sad truth is that I was avoiding the pain and trauma of my childhood. People may have questioned my intentions, but I didn't care. I just didn't want to end up hurt more than I already was, or taken advantage of and not able to recover because of my past.
I tried everything I could think of to cope. In high school, I was on one date where a boy asked me if I wanted to "fuck", and I told him to take me home. He quickly threw me into the back of his car, and he drove me home in the freezing cold with the windows rolled down. We had been on a double date, and he and his friend then threatened to rape me and my friend in a field. When I got home I locked myself in the bathroom and cried.
Years later, I ended up married. The man wasn't someone I wanted to marry, but I was still confused at this point because of not having addressed my past. I wish I had stopped the marriage. On our wedding night, I was sexually assaulted by my husband. At that moment I felt completely alone and abandoned, with no one who cared about me, especially this man I had just married.
I had been asleep, laying in our bed in white wedding lingerie waiting for him, and when I wouldn't wake up, AND when I said no, he forced himself on me. I did things to steer clear of him after that, and eventually I left him, but it was not without many harsh words from my family and other people that I knew.
I felt like I couldn't tell them what had really happened, and if I did, I'd never hear the end of it. I was afraid I'd hear things like, "It was your wedding night, and that's what you were supposed to do," or, "What were you wearing?", etc., etc. I didn't think anyone would listen to the fact that I told him "no" several times, and how he shook me awake.
It never occurred to me that in healthy relationships a man could wait until the morning to have sex with his partner, no matter what she was wearing. Or that if she was asleep, she would eventually wake up and could have sex at that time. The truth is that there was no rush to have sex, and there is absolutely no reason to ever to force it on someone.
So I kept what happened to myself, and I tried to move forward. I was happy for a brief period after my divorce. Then I started dating again, after almost nine years, and I was raped again -- viciously. At this point in my life my world came crashing down on top of me. I wanted to just crumble into a huge pile on the floor. I said nothing to anyone about it, and I just tried to keep myself together, but it didn't work. My world fell apart. I believe it was a culmination of everything I had been through in my life, starting with those sexualized photos that were taken of me by my uncle when I was a toddler.
Later, after both of these rapes had occurred, I told my relatives what had happened, and I was met with silence and nothingness. No one said much. No one said that they were sad, or sorry, or that they even wanted to help. The entire time I had stayed quiet because I was afraid of making them mad, or getting my uncle into trouble, or even my ex-husband, but when I finally spoke up I was shocked to hear very little commotion.
I believe that my life literally had to end up in shambles in order for me to come clean about what happened to me, even though I knew people were going to hate me, and hate what I had to say.
I was so ashamed over most of what was done to me and what I had endured, but I knew I couldn't live my life that way anymore. I couldn't stand being blamed anymore for being unhappy, or having people say such cruel things about me with such little regard for the sacrifices I had made for my family -- by remaining silent to protect a molester and keep the peace. In the end I had no family there standing with me when the truth came out. It was heartbreaking and life altering.
This story is absolutely one of the most difficult things I have ever had to write, because it is coming from somewhere deep inside that I don't normally allow others access to. I am tapping into and sharing the underlying personal reasons why I have spoken out against crimes done to others -- such as molestation, child abuse, spousal rape and sexual assault. It is because they were also done to *me.*
I couldn't stand one more person telling me any of these horrific crimes were *my* fault. When I was blamed for my divorce, I wish people would have just trusted me. Instead they defended my ex-husband, the man who raped me. Every time a family member came to his defense, a little part of me died inside, because of the painful burden of the awful truth of what I was keeping secret. This same situation was also true for what my uncle did to me, and what the last man who raped me did.
My story correlates to AntiPornography.org and the anti-porn cause because it all started with inappropriate and sexualized photos that my uncle took of me when I was a very young and innocent child. Somehow I think if I'd seen healthier photos of myself, and not been molested, my life would have turned out very differently. I feel certain it would have.
However, I do know that all of that is behind me now, because I am talking about it openly for the first time in my entire life. I do realize now that things like pornography and sexual exploitation severely handicap the beliefs of those people who are harmed by them.
I was a young child who learned the message from when I was a toddler that it was ok to be photographed naked by my own caretaker. Even though I didn't *allow* this to occur, it created many conflicting beliefs in me, in regards to everything else I have endured. Basically the message that was indoctrinated into me was: "Women and girls aren't important, and are meant to be used."
Quite frankly, this is why I felt the need to sacrifice so much of my own well-being for the sake of others. It's because I didn't feel important enough to speak up, and I thought it was every male's prerogative to use me in the same way my uncle did.
Despite everything, though, I have made it through and am so much wiser. I will NEVER exploit any children I may have, especially the girls. I never EVER want them to think that their worth lies in their being naked or being sexually pleasing for someone else. That twisted lesson that was given me to me was horribly wrong, and terribly distorted and confusing.
There was no way I could have understood or properly dealt with what was done to me at the age it happened. However, I have done my best since then, and now as an adult I have fully turned my life around, because I am determined to put a full STOP to any future generations being abused in any way, sexually or otherwise. Everyone deserves better than that.
I had a similar background of abuse and kept it all silent because i was also ashamed although it was not my fault. After about 15 years and lots of anxiety that had accumulated I finally told my therapist and then others which helped a little but my faith was the major thing that kept me going.
I grew up thinking the same way, that I was not important and what i said would not make a difference. I am in my forties now and finally realizing why I had such a difficult time with relationships throughout my life because i was afraid to trust any man. I am still healing my wounds and also am motivated to changing how future women are treated. Thank you for sharing your story. I understand what you went through and I thank God I met people to help me through my difficult journey.
Thank you for sharing your story. So many women and men suffer in silence about abuse. We talk all of the time about bullying in our culture but no one talks about sexual abuse, rape, or harrassment. Rape is repeatedly happening to women everywhere and everyday. It is so evil that no one can process it when it is happening and so no one gets caught. It took me 10 years to process what happened to me in college and like you I am repeatedly wounded by the porn culture we live in. We all need to speak up more!
Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality
DESCRIPTION
Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality takes an unflinching look at today’s porn industry: the stories woven into the images, the impact on our culture, the effects on us as men and women, the business machine that creates and markets porn, and the growing legitimacy of porn in mainstream media. Above all, PORNLAND examines the way porn shapes and limits sexual imaginations and behaviors.
Although we are surrounded by pornographic images, many people are not aware of just how cruel and violent the industry is today. PORNLAND shows how today’s porn is strikingly different from yesterday’s Playboy and Penthouse magazines — how competition in the industry and consumer desensitization have pushed porn toward hard core extremes. And, with the advent of the internet and other digital technologies, users don’t have to wander far to access porn; todaythe average age of first viewing is about 11 for boys, and studies reveal that young men, who consume more porn than ever before, have difficulty forming healthy relationships.
PORNLAND also looks at how our porn culture affects the way women and girls think about their bodies, their sexuality and their relationships. PORNLAND: How Porn has Hijacked our Sexuality argues that rather than sexually liberating or empowering us, porn offers us a plasticized, formulaic, generic version of sex that is boring, lacking in creativity and disconnected from emotion and intimacy.
Shared Hope International specifically focuses on fighting the demand for commercial sexual exploitaiton, including addressing pornography as a very significant demand factor for sex trafficking.
Please see their excellent report on this issue:
Pornography: Creating Demand for International Sex Trafficking
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Pornography is a marketing device for sex trafficking: It normalizes degradation and violence as acceptable and even inevitable parts of sex, and uses the bodies of real women and children as objects. The difference between pornography and erotica is clear in the roots of the words themselves -- porne means females slaves, eros means love -- so pornography, like rape, is about violence and domination, not sex. Millions of lives depend on our ability to separate pornography from erotica, and to disentangle violence from sexuality."

Gloria Steinem, 2006

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED. PLEASE DONATE IF YOU ARE ABLE TO.

Please remember that it is not up to AntiPornography.org, the other organizations listed on this page, the government, or "someone else" to do the entire job of fighting against the devastating harms of pornography, prostitution, trafficking, and other forms of sexual exploitation or abuse. It is an enormous job and the responsibility lies with each and every one of us to do our part as part of the bigger team of those who are choosing to be part of the solution of creating a more just and humane world for everyone, rather than be part of the problem.

So thank you in advance for whatever you are able to contribute to the cause, whether in the form of a tax-deductible donation or your actions. What you do does matter, so for the sake of all those across the world who are being exploited and abused, and for the sake of the future of humanity, please do what you can to create a more compassionate and safer society for all.

Thank you for whatever you are able to give or do to help create a better world for everyone, especially for women, children and future generations.

 YOUR SUPPORTIVE ACTIONS & YOUR DONATIONS ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

THEY CAN AND WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
