AntiPornography.org Press Mentions and Quotes - 2015
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 2015 AntiPornography.org received a total of 23 mentions in the press, including several quotes.
The quotes of our organization were in articles at The Washington Post (Nov. 30 and Dec. 7) and MSNBC. They concerned the many accusations of rape and assault against porn performer James Deen, by more than ten female performers -- starting with an ex-girlfriend of Deen's named Stoya. (Deen is known for his penchant for violent and abusive porn, featuring "rough sex" and BDSM.) These accusations caused a firestorm in the media about various issues concerning the porn industry, including violence, consent, "stigma," and safety. We were glad to have our viewpoint represented.
Other quotes in the press that were related to our organization were from former porn performers (and one current one), who are friends of ours, and whom we've been helping in various ways, including facilitating them speaking out. (Cameron Bay, Marianna Luft, and Ashley L.) We provided these quotes to news outlets who requested them. (1. Market Watch, regarding virtual reality porn. 2. The Daily Trojan of the University of Southern California, regarding the 2016 proposed condoms-in-porn legislation for all of California, and general health and safety in the porn industry.)
Finally, we received a number of mentions in the press -- including The Hollywood Reporter and The Guardian -- when we participated in a group campaign in February, that was led by -- and involved -- several other anti-porn organizations. The #50DollarsNot50Shades protest was against the normalization and mainstreaming of pornography, sadomasochism, and violence against women, that was shown and glamorized in the film (and book) "Fifty Shades of Grey." The campaign encouraged people to donate $50 to a domestic violence shelter, rather than going to see the "Fifty Shades" film on Valentine's Day or afterwards.
We've included all of the quotes and mentions below, with excerpts of the articles for minimal context, and with links to the full articles. We encourage everyone to read the informative full articles, especially the ones where our organization or former porn performers are quoted. Thanks!
But in the wake of the recent scandal, many have noted that Deen’s “feminist” label clashed with a history of tweeting rape jokes; he had also stated publicly that he doesn’t “associate with any ism” or consider himself a feminist.
His swift downfall has created a PR headache for an industry that already had plenty of critics, who seized upon accounts of Deen’s behavior as further evidence that sex work and pornography is misogynistic and dangerous. The advocacy group Antipornography.org argued in a Facebook post that the problems with porn don’t just lie in its criminalization or the stigmas attached to it, but in “the inherent sexist, degrading and exploitative nature of women’s sexuality being sold to men for them to use, abuse, and then dispose of.”
Producers of adult films do give actors the choice in deciding whether or not they would like to use a condom; however, producers display an oppressive nature towards actors by manipulating or pressuring them into not using condoms.
In an interview facilitated by AntiPornography.org, a nonprofit organization, ex-porn performer Marianna Luft, formerly known as “Neesa” in the industry, explained that actors would generally be treated better if they choose not to use a condom. Those in favor of using a condom would typically be viewed by producers as not as valuable, especially to the company running the production.
In Luft’s 10-year experience as a performer, STDs were very prevalent, just as they are today. And though she was tested every 30 days, that didn’t keep her safe, as she contracted many infections anyway.
[...]
Also in an interview facilitated by AntiPornography.org, Ashley L., a current performer who wishes to remain anonymous when supporting condoms in porn to avoid any ostracizing, harassment, and potential loss of work, says that condoms would implement a significant change to the industry. There is an “increasing trend of STDs rising in places where there’s more consumers [of porn],” including exposure to HIV.
Ashley believes that by normalizing the use of condoms in the industry, people outside of porn will emulate the act of safe and consensual sex while preventing STDs on an international scale.
“What we do in porn tends to be what people try to emulate,” she said. If consumers are exposed to consistent use of condoms, they will definitely set a standard in terms of safer and consensual sex.
The use of condoms in the industry will give consumers realistic expectations. This small but significant change means that many people partaking in sexual intercourse within the industry won’t be getting sick anymore. In addition, Ashley explained that using condoms in adult films would help reduce the stigma outside of pornography.
Ultimately, this issue remains relevant in today’s society and culture. Focusing on the use of condoms will only prompt a positive change in the way sex is portrayed and seen, and will advocate for a proactive mindset towards sexual protection.
Now his alleged actions are being blasted on both sides of the pornography debate. The non-profit AntiPornography.orgtweeted Monday: “It’s horrific that James Deen has raped several women in porn & even more so how porn fuels rape of ALL women.” On the other hand, Corvid has said Deen’s alleged actions could lead to the criminalization of “every form of sex work, including porn,” in an open letter published in The Establishment.“ Given your fame and public pronouncements about consent, your behavior could unleash a conservative backlash that might place the safety and livelihoods of thousands of porn performers at risk,” she wrote to Deen.
As buzz surrounding the accusations built over the weekend, some sex industry insiders voiced concern about the scandal’s potential impact on a profession that has struggled against stigma and criminalization. Anti-pornography activists seized on the accusations against Deen as an opportunity to link porn and BDSM (bondage, domination, sadism and masochism) to sexual assault in general: “It’s horrific that James Deen has raped several women in porn, & even more so how his porn fuels rape of ALL women…,” anti-porn nonprofit AntiPornography.org tweeted Monday.
X-rated movies to be No. 3 virtual-reality market by 2025, but former performers aren’t big fans
-----
But as pornography companies invest more money in virtual reality, activists contend they are doing so at the expense of industry performers.
“This shows the industry still doesn’t give a damn about performers and all they care about is their bottom line,” said Cameron Adams, a former performer who went by the stage name Cameron Bay and, through an affiliation with the nonprofit AntiPornography.org, now speaks out against damage done by the pornography industry.
If pornography businesses have the extra cash to spend on new technologies, they should, Adams argued, be doing more to protect performers, such as by providing health care for those who contract sexually transmitted diseases while working and paying for resources to ensure production teams are abiding by federal laws that, for example, require adult-film actors to wear condoms during filming.
“It’s clearly going to cost a hell of a lot more money to produce these virtual-reality films using different cameras and things of that nature,” Adams said.
The #50dollarsnot50shades campaign is urging people to donate the money they'd spend on the film to a shelter or domestic violence agency.
-----
The campaign, which as of Wednesday morning has 4,156 likes on its Facebook page, is backed by several American and Canadian anti-abuse and anti-exploitation organizations, including the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, which condemned the film in its own Facebook post last month; Canada's London Abused Women's Centre; Stop Porn Culture; Antipornography.org; One Angry Girl Designs; and Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan.
The campaign and its sponsors say Fifty Shades glamorizes violence against women.
Thank you for checking out our press mentions and quotes for 2015! We hope to surpass the above amount in 2016, so we can continue to raise awareness about the horrific harms of pornography and the sex industry. But we are at a critical turning point right now, where we need major funding for our organization to continue. DESCRIPTION
Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexualitytakes an unflinching look at today’s porn industry: the stories woven into the images, the impact on our culture, the effects on us as men and women, the business machine that creates and markets porn, and the growing legitimacy of porn in mainstream media. Above all, PORNLAND examines the way porn shapes and limits sexual imaginations and behaviors.
Although we are surrounded by pornographic images, many people are not aware of just how cruel and violent the industry is today. PORNLANDshows how today’s porn is strikingly different from yesterday’s Playboy and Penthouse magazines — how competition in the industry and consumer desensitization have pushed porn toward hard core extremes. And, with the advent of the internet and other digital technologies, users don’t have to wander far to access porn; todaythe average age of first viewing is about 11 for boys, and studies reveal that young men, who consume more porn than ever before, have difficulty forming healthy relationships.
PORNLAND also looks at how our porn culture affects the way women and girls think about their bodies, their sexuality and their relationships. PORNLAND: How Porn has Hijacked our Sexuality argues that rather than sexually liberating or empowering us, porn offers us a plasticized, formulaic, generic version of sex that is boring, lacking in creativity and disconnected from emotion and intimacy.
Shared Hope International specifically focuses on fighting the demand for commercial sexual exploitaiton, including addressing pornography as a very significant demand factor for sex trafficking.
"Pornography is a marketing device for sex trafficking: It normalizes degradation and violence as acceptable and even inevitable parts of sex, and uses the bodies of real women and children as objects. The difference between pornography and erotica is clear in the roots of the words themselves -- porne means females slaves, eros means love -- so pornography, like rape, is about violence and domination, not sex. Millions of lives depend on our ability to separate pornography from erotica, and to disentangle violence from sexuality."
Please remember that it is not up to AntiPornography.org, the other organizations listed on this page, the government, or "someone else" to do the entire job of fighting against the devastating harms of pornography, prostitution, trafficking, and other forms of sexual exploitation or abuse. It is an enormous job and the responsibility lies with each and every one of us to do our part as part of the bigger team of those who are choosing to be part of the solution of creating a more just and humane world for everyone, rather than be part of the problem.
So thank you in advance for whatever you are able to contribute to the cause, whether in the form of a tax-deductible donation or your actions. What you do does matter, so for the sake of all those across the world who are being exploited and abused, and for the sake of the future of humanity, please do what you can to create a more compassionate and safer society for all.
