WHAT'S WRONG WITH PROSTITUTION?
Prostitution is a destructive and multibillion-dollar global industry which oppresses and harms millions of women and children worldwide. It creates demand for and fuels ILLEGAL and DEADLY SEX TRAFFICKING and SEX SLAVERY. (Trafficking in human beings -- mostly of women and girls into forced prostitution -- is the second largest illegal trade internationally after weapons.)
Many people also think that prostitution is just consenting adults engaging in sex and that it is a "victimless crime." That could not be further from the truth. The average age at entry into prostitution is 14, and most young women who enter into prostitution at that age are runaways. Many are drug addicts. The vast majority of them are controlled and abused by pimps.
Please see the video below which tells the story of one such girl who is representative of how most young women end up in prostitution. Please also bear in mind that usually by the time these young women are 18 and are engaging in prostitution as so-called "consenting adults," they are so destroyed by all of the abuse that they have experienced in prostitution that they don't feel that they have any other options. Most of them have become addicted to drugs because their pimps have forcefully fed drugs to them, and almost all of them feel extremely damaged and that they are not good for anything other than sex because that's all they've ever known and that's what they have been told for years. The vast majority of prostituted women and children want to leave prostitution and do not enjoy it. Please see ProstitutionResearch.com for more details on all of the above as well as the page on our website about the book "Johns," by Victor Malarek. Also please watch the ABC 20/20 documentary special on this website "Prostitution in America: Working Girls Speak."
PROSTITUTION AND PORNOGRAPHY ARE CONNECTED:
There are a lot of people who think that prostitution is very harmful, but many of those same people are very pro-pornography and somehow think that pornography is very different than prostitution and that it's harmless. What they fail to realize is that pornography is nothing more than filmed prostitution, and often the two are interconnected, with those who are prostituted in the usual manner being used for pornography, and those who are pornography performers sometimes engaging in typical prostitution on the side. (See "Empire of Illusion" page.)
IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING CRIMINALIZATION OF PROSTITUTED WOMEN AND CHILDREN:
AntiPornography.org is NOT in favor of criminalizing or penalizing prostituted women, men or children. We are in favor of laws like Sweden has: only criminalizing the johns and the pimps (the DEMAND), not the prostituted women or children. (The SUPPLY.) See our page on Prostitution Legalization and:
"Sweden's Prostitution Solution: Why Hasn't Anyone Tried This Before?"
Please also see the many organizations and websites that address prostitution in the link lists further down this page and in the footer of every page on this website.

REGARDING LEGALIZING PROSTITUTION AND WHY IT'S NOT A GOOD IDEA:
Many people who acknowledge that prostitution can be harmful are in favor of the legalization of prostitution. They feel that it will make things safer for everyone involved, particularly the women. Unfortunately they are misguided. It may sound like a good idea in theory, however a number of countries have legalized prostitution and the results have proved that it is not a workable solution. Please see the below 10 points which explain why legalizing prostitution is not the solution to the harms of prostitution. For the full article please see the link below the list.Also please see the page on this web site "Prostitution Legalization."
10 Reasons for Not Legalizing Prostitution
By Janice G. Raymond
1. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution is a gift to pimps, traffickers and the sex industry.
2. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution and the sex industry promotes sex trafficking.
3. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution does not control the sex industry. It expands it.
4. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution increases clandestine, hidden, illegal and street prostitution.
5. Legalization of prostitution and decriminalization of the sex Industry increases child prostitution.
6. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution does not protect the women in prostitution.
7. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution increases the demand for prostitution. It boosts the motivation of men to buy women for sex in a much wider and more permissible range of socially acceptable settings.
8. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution does not promote women's health.
9. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution does not enhance women's choice.
10. Women in systems of Prostitution do not want the sex industry legalized or decriminalized.
For the full version of the list, with explanations for each point, please click here.
For our full page on why prostitution should not be legalized, please see:
"What prostituted women must endure in their "employment" is, what in other contexts, would be the accepted definition of sexual harassment and sexual abuse in the workplace -- "employer" behavior that is unwanted and insulting, and unwelcome sexual attention, violence, and conduct that is offensive and threatening. What then happens to women in prostitution whose very "job" -- if we term it "commercial sex work" -- constitutes, what in any other "workplace," would be defined as sexual harassment and abuse? It is the exchange of money in prostitution that serves to transform what is actually sexual harassment, sexual abuse, and sexual violence into a "job" known as "commercial sex work," a "job" performed primarily by racially and economically disadvantaged women in the so-called first and third worlds, and by overwhelming numbers of women and children who have been the victims of childhood sexual abuse."

Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexualitytakes an unflinching look at today’s porn industry: the stories woven into the images, the impact on our culture, the effects on us as men and women, the business machine that creates and markets porn, and the growing legitimacy of porn in mainstream media. Above all, PORNLAND examines the way porn shapes and limits sexual imaginations and behaviors.
Although we are surrounded by pornographic images, many people are not aware of just how cruel and violent the industry is today. PORNLANDshows how today’s porn is strikingly different from yesterday’s Playboy and Penthouse magazines — how competition in the industry and consumer desensitization have pushed porn toward hard core extremes. And, with the advent of the internet and other digital technologies, users don’t have to wander far to access porn; todaythe average age of first viewing is about 11 for boys, and studies reveal that young men, who consume more porn than ever before, have difficulty forming healthy relationships.
PORNLAND also looks at how our porn culture affects the way women and girls think about their bodies, their sexuality and their relationships. PORNLAND: How Porn has Hijacked our Sexuality argues that rather than sexually liberating or empowering us, porn offers us a plasticized, formulaic, generic version of sex that is boring, lacking in creativity and disconnected from emotion and intimacy.

"DEMAND" - A Documentary by Shared Hope International
This excellent documentary by the anti-sex trafficking organization Shared Hope International is about demand factors for sex trafficking, one of the most significant of which is pornography. It also addresses how all forms of commercial sexual exploitation such as pornography, stripping and prostitution are connected to all other forms such as sex trafficking and sex slavery. Please visit EndDemand.org to learn more about how demand for sex trafficking is created by those individuals (mostly men) who purchase women and children for sex.
For 2 minute and 12 minute versions of the above video, as well as more information from Shared Hope about demand, please click here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shared Hope International specifically focuses on fighting the demand for commercial sexual exploitaiton, including addressing pornography as a very significant demand factor for sex trafficking.
"Pornography is a marketing device for sex trafficking: It normalizes degradation and violence as acceptable and even inevitable parts of sex, and uses the bodies of real women and children as objects. The difference between pornography and erotica is clear in the roots of the words themselves -- porne means females slaves, eros means love -- so pornography, like rape, is about violence and domination, not sex. Millions of lives depend on our ability to separate pornography from erotica, and to disentangle violence from sexuality."
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED. PLEASE DONATE IF YOU ARE ABLE TO.
Please remember that it is not up to AntiPornography.org, the other organizations listed on this page, the government, or "someone else" to do the entire job of fighting against the harms of pornography, prostitution, trafficking, and other forms of sexual exploitation or abuse. It is an enormous job and the responsibility lies with each and every one of us to do our part as part of the bigger team of those who are choosing to be part of the solution of creating a more just and humane world for everyone rather than the problem. So thank you in advance for whatever you are able to contribute to the cause, whether in the form of a tax-deductible donation or your actions. What you do does matter, so for the sake of all those across the world who are being exploited and abused, and for the sake of the future of humanity, please do what you can to create a more compassionate and safer society for all.
Thank you for whatever you are able to give or do to help create a better world for everyone, especially for women, children and future generations.
